Alaska Aces coach Alex Compton said that he and the entire team are completely behind troubled forward Calvin Abueva. Even if it means missing practices and actual games.

Abueva, who was recently dropped by coach Chot Reyes from the Gilas pool for the 2nd window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier after missing three straight Monday evening practices, was suited up and was even warming up with the rest of the team when he dropped everything and hurriedly left the venue prior to the team’s game against Blackwater.

Compton admitted that Abueva asked permission to leave to deal with a personal emergency and he readily obliged.

“Alaska’s always been family first, I will never get in the way of somebody taking care of something important with their family,” said Compton during the post-game interview of their game last Saturday.

“We’re a family-first franchise, it’s one of the things that makes me proud to be part of Alaska. We obviously missed Calvin but the other guys stepped up in his absence and we’re just praying for him,” added Compton shortly after the team picked up its 4th straight win.
