Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) inaugural conference champion Batangas City-Tanduay Athelics is hoping to sign up former Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel guard Jayjay Helterbrand to fortify its bid for back-to-back titles in the fast-growing regional format cage league.
Former Batangas City mayor and current Athletics team manager Dondon Dimacuha hinted at luring the 41-year old Helterbrand out of retirement during the team’s victory party at the Sheraton Hotel.
“Ang suggestion ko dahil meron pa silang budget ay kumuha tayo ulit ng ex-PBA player,” said Dimacuha.
“And we’re thinking of Helterbrand,” he added.
The newly retired 41-year old Fil-Am had a brief stint with the Batangas Blades in the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) before hooking up with the Gin Kings in 2000. He played a total of 16 seasons for the PBA’s most popular team and was part of 6 championships, including back-back Governors’ Cup titles in 2016 and 2017. He was adjudged as league MVP in 2009.
The 2nd conference of the MPBL kicks off on June 12 with 24 participating teams which includes 10 expansion teams from Luzon and 4 from the South.
