Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher ‘Bong’ Go has been getting a lot of flak lately from Pinoy basketball fans for evidently using the sport as a springboard for his Senatorial plans in 2019.

The 43-year old Go first participated in a side event of the recently concluded PBA All-Star Week, the Legends Three-point Shootout. He followed it up with another three-point shootout stint, this time in the ongoing FIBA 3×3 World Cup along with Senators Sonny Angara and Joel Villanueva.

And just days from now, Go will make his debut as a player for the Muntinlupa Cagers when the team takes on Mandaluyong El Tigre in the main event of Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League’s opening day.

Fans have since been critical of the move, branding it as a form of electioneering. Aside from that, the decision to play deprives one under-privileged and definitely more deserving player of a spot on the team.

Go, however, maintains that his decision to play in the league is not for himself but more for the promotion of the sport of basketball in the country.

“Sa totoo lang po, ayoko pong magsinungaling pero saling pusa lang po talaga ako doon. Kakalabanin mo sila Bobby Ray Parks at iba pa. Talagang mga higante ‘yan. May edad na po tayo,” said Go.

“Sa akin lang, masaya yung tao at ma-promote ang basketball by area or by cities po,” added the Davao City native.
