Just three days after eclipsing the record for largest attendance during a Finals game, the record was once again smashed largely due to the Brgy. Ginebra faithful who trooped to the Philippine Arena in Bocaue Bulacan to support their team in its quest to repeat as Governors’ Cup champions.
Game 5 of the Finals series between Meralco and Brgy. Ginebra drew 36,445 fans. The figure shattered the old record of 23,436 set during Game 3 of the 2013 Commissioner’s Cup Finals between Alaska and Brgy. Ginebra.
With the Gin Kings carrying a 3-2 series lead, Game 6 presented the first of two chances for the team to successfully defend the title they won last year at the expense of the very same team. Despite being scheduled on a Wednesday, a mammoth crowd of 53,642 showed up to witness the league’s most popular team’s first shot at the title. The figure shattered the old record of 52,612 which was set during the opening of the 2014 season.
The Bolts, however, had other things is mind as they started the game strong and were able to thwart attempts by the defending champs to wrest the lead. They held on the rest of the way to register a 98-91 Game 6 victory.
Game 7 is set on Friday, October 27 also at the Philippine Arena.
