In a preview of their best-of-three quarterfinal showdown, Barangay Ginebra and Rain or Shine engaged in a triple-overtime grind-out battle Friday.
The Gin Kings outlasted the Elasto Painters, 100-82, in the tiring game to set up their matchup in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals beginning Monday at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
Earlier, Phoenix Petroleum banked on a big game by Matthew Wright to ward off GlobalPort, 104-100, and in the process live to fight another game.
Victories by Ginebra and Phoenix sent Blackwater to the door.
San Miguel Beer, Magnolia, Alaska Milk, Rain or Shine, Ginebra, NLEX and GlobalPort finished in that order in the elimination round. Left to dispute the eighth and last playoff seed are Phoenix and TNT KaTropa.
The Kings should’ve been the ones to figure in a do-or-die game for the last quarters slot had they dropped their 63-minute grind-out battle with the E-Painters.
“That’s the first good thing that happened to us this conference. And it took us three overtimes to that,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone, gaining a big relief after all the bad breaks they suffered in the tourney.
Brgy. Ginebra 100 – Aguilar J. 30, Tenorio 20, Devance 15, Mercado 10, Thompson 10, Cruz 6, Caguioa 3, Ferrer 3, Mariano 3, Aguilar R. 0.
