After word leaked out the Calvin Abueva has been reinserted into the Gilas pool for the 2nd window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, no less than coach Chot Reyes clarified that while the 30-year old native of Angeles City is still open to practice with the team, he will no longer be considered for the upcoming matches against Australia and Japan.
“Baka nananaginip lang,” was Reyes’ curt reply.
“Calvin is still part of the pool just like everybody else here. He continues to come in practice,” he added.
The 54-year old long-time national team mentor also said that the coaching staff is still reassessing the health and conditioning of the members of the pool and the final 12 hasn’t been finalized yet.
“We haven’t made any decision either way because we’re still assessing all the injury status of the guys. We’re not yet in a position to make any final decision.”
If there’s one thing that is certain though, it’s that “The Beast” is definitely out of the roster for the 2nd window. Reyes is standing firm on his decision not to include the energizer bunny from Alaska which means there’s no truth to the news of his reinstatement at all.
“We took him out of consideration for the second window, but he has remained part of the pool, and there’s no change there.”
The national team leaves for Melbourne on February 19.
