Is Calvin Abueva fed up with the losing streak of Alaska?
The 29-year old energetic forward was nowhere to be found on the Alaska bench as the Aces stumbled to their third straight loss of the conference, and 11th overall dating back to the Commissioner’s Cup.
When asked about Abueva’s absence, coach Alex Compton’s reply was, “He has personal matters to take care of, that’s all I can comment.”
Aside from missing last night’s game against Star, Abueva also missed Gilas Pilipinas’ first practice last Thursday at the Upper Deck Gym.
Abueva was on Chot Reyes’ Final 12 list for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, which will be held in Beirut Lebanon on August 8 to 20, along with teammate Carl Bryan Cruz.
The “Beast” submitted averages of 10.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in Alaska’s first 2 games of the conference. The Aces lost their opening game to NLEX, 114-122 and then bowed to Phoenix in their next game, 93-95.
The Aces were in control against the Hotshots in the first half before losing their composure in the 2nd half and allowing the SMC-owned franchise to grab a 101-92 win.
“We’ll find out in the coming days. Other than that, I don’t have any comments that I can give you right now,” was all Compton could say when asked if Abueva will be available for the Aces’ upcoming games. – Mae Villarin
