Meralco absorbed a 107-88 beating from a determined GlobalPort squad led by no less than former Bolts Jonathan Grey and Kelly Nabong in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Grey scattered a team high 24 points to match his career best while Nabong had season highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds in his first game against the team that suspended and eventually waived him after he had an altercation with assistant coach Jimmy Alapag.
Win the win, the Batang Pier moved up to a tie for 4th place with TNT, Phoenix, Rain or Shine and Brgy. Ginebra with identical 3-3 win-loss records.
“I think our defense worked well in the second and third quarters. Fourth quarter, bigayan na ‘yon then we both went through the motion in the fourth quarter,” said GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio.
“Our first group delivered and so did our second group that’s why the lead grew so big,” he added.
Sean Anthony also had a solid game for GlobalPort as he finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Chris Newsome and Reynel Hugnatan paced Meralco with 17 points apiece but could only get a combined 10 points from Jared Dillinger, Baser Amer and KG Canaleta.
