GlobalPort Batang Pier stunned top-seeded Rain or Shine 114-113 and lived to fight another day, thanks to Jonathan Grey’s go-ahead triple with 11.5 seconds left on the game clock, Tuesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Grey’s corner three completed a furious fightback by the Batang Pier who were down by 16 points, 89-73 in the closing minutes of the 3rd period.
The 8th-seeded GlobalPort thus arranged a winner-take-all match with their victims on Thursday at the same venue.
Maverick Ahanmisi missed three straight free throws in the final seconds of the game to set the stage for Grey’s heroics.
The Elasto Painters still had a lot of time to pull off the win but Gabe Norwood’s triple missed its mark before Reggie Johnson’s putback attempt was swatted away by Malcolm White. Ahanmisi heaved a desperation shot as time expired but also failed to find its way in.
White led the Batang Pier with 28 points and 16 boards Grey came up with a career-best 22.
Stanley Pringle contributed 21 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 9 assists.
Johnson paced the Elasto Painters with 24 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists while Raymond Almazan and James Yap added 17 and 16 points respectively.
