The Gilas Cadets collapsed entirely in the 2nd half of their game against the rebuilding DLSU Green Archers and lost 72-91 despite leading by as much as 20 in the early goings.
The loss was the 2nd straight for the Cadets in the 12th Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup presented by Chooks-to-Go. The national team is using the tournament as a build-up for the upcoming 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Gilas coach Josh Reyes lamented the team’s lack of effort, especially in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter when the Green Archers unleashed a 20-1 finishing kick on the disorganized Cadets.
“If we lost the 20 points because you know, we couldn’t just hit shots, we couldn’t run the offense well, then we could work on that,” said Reyes during the post-game interview.
“But lack of effort, every one of them, they just have to figure it out themselves. We have a lot of egos on the floor. I’m not saying it’s bad. It’s no secret we have players that are trying to prove themselves out there. When everything’s out the same time on the floor, they clash. They implode. We played well, but when the chips were down, we imploded.”
The Cadets next take on reigning NCAA champions San Beda on Sunday, April 29, 6:30pm at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
