June Mar Fajardo and the rest of the mighty San Miguel Beermen advanced to the Finals of the 2018 Philippine Cup via 4-1 thrashing of sister team Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel.
The Beermen cliched the Finals ticket with a 100-94 victory in Game 5 as Fajardo once again proved to be an immovable presence inside.
The 28-year old native of Pinamungahan Cebu punctuated his series-long brilliance with a team-high 25 points along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block.
The win marks the second consecutive time the Beermen have defeated the Gin Kings in the 5th game of a best-of-seven series. San Miguel likewise disposed of the crowd favorites in similar fashion in the semifinal round of the same conference last season.
Fajardo, who was adjudged as the Best Player of the Game in the series clincher, praised the Game 5 effort of Brgy. Ginebra’s 3rd-year combo guard Scottie Thompson.
The 28-year old product of Perpetual Help posted a triple-double with 10 points, 16 rebounds and 16 assists, something which caught the eye of Fajardo.
“Magaling si Scottie tumiming sa rebound. Magaling din siya mag-draw ng depensa. Lagi niya nahahanap yung bakanteng teammates niya,” said the 4-time league MVP.
“Siya yung isa sa priority namin sa defense eh, pero nakaka-rebound pa rin siya,” he added.
The Beermen now await the winner of the NLEX vs Magnolia semifinal series which is currently tied at 2-2.
