Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes took to Twitter to defend himself after fans castigated him on social media for standing firm on his decision to leave Calvin Abueva out of consideration for the 2nd window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier.
What probably got the ire of fans was Reyes’ statement that Abueva ‘must be dreaming’ after word leaked out that the 30-year old product of San Sebastian College has been reinstated.
Reyes immediately dismissed reports that Abueva was indeed being reconsidered. The 54-year old national team mentor explained that Abueva was practicing with the team just to help out and keep himself abreast with the team’s system. He added that he coaching staff haven’t decided yet on the final roster but it’s for certain that Abueva won’t be included. He also denied ‘downing’ members of the Gilas pool and even challenged those who think otherwise to ask the players themselves.
Here we go again – people batting for this player & that, some even saying we’re ‘downing’ our own players. I dare you ask any Gilas player if they feel that. You just don’t know whats really going on inside, & how difficult our situation is.
