With only 1:37 left in the game and GlobalPort comfortably up 103-88 over KIA, Batang Pier coach Pido Jarencio took a page from Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr’s book and designated 33-year old veteran Ryan Araña design the play during the timeout.
“Sige, Ry, ikaw mag-drawing ng last play for Stanley. So nag-drawing ako and everyone was listening,” explained Araña on how he was instructed by Jarencio to map out their next play.
“Naka-score kami, naka-score si Stanley, pero nag-sub, kaya hindi natuloy yung play. So galit na galit ako sa gilid,” added the 6-foot-2 guard out of DLSU with a smirk.
Despite the play not being properly executed, Jarencio, Araña and the rest of the Batang Pier went home fulfilled after securing the much-needed win which boosted their record to 5-5 and improved their chances of making the playoffs.
