The PBA Board of Governors have approved a request by Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes and coursed through Commissioner Willie Marcial for a nine-day break during the 3rd and final window of the 1st round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
Marcial disclosed the latest development after their meeting last Monday at the league headquarters in Libis, Quezon City.
“I asked the governors if we could help Gilas because I know coach Chot Reyes is having a hard time to get his pool together in practice. The board granted my request,” said the league’s 10th commissioner.
“But as regards coach Chot’s wish for 15 days, I couldn’t give it to him at this time because if we do, the season would end by January 2019,” he added.
The scheduled break will happen on June 25 to July 3, during which Reyes will have all the national team players at his full disposal.
Gilas plays Chinese-Taipei on June 29 in Taiwan before taking on powerhouse Australia at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue Bulacan on July 2.
Reyes, while hoping for more considerations to further boost the training and preparation of the national team, is still grateful for the accommodation made by the league and the continued support of Marcial.
“It’s fortunate that the commissioner and I have an open line. We keep calling and talking to each other,” said the controversial mentor.
