PBA says Manny Pacquiao prohibited from joining Senate Defenders in UNTV Cup

Just days after Senator Manny Pacquiao confirmed his participation in the UNTV Cup as a player for the Senate Defenders, the PBA reminded him that his (Uniform Players Contract) UPC prevents him from doing so.

Pacquiao is currently in the active roster of the Mahindra Enforcer and has just recently scored a career-high 4 points in his team’s victory over the Blackwater ELite.

The UNTV Cup basketball league, which opens at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on August 29, is on its 5th season.

Pacquiao was supposed to join two other cager-politicians, Senators Sonny Angara and Joel Villanueva in the Senate Defenders as team captain and co-captain respectively.

“I am excited to play side by side with Senators Angara and Villanueva and our goal is to get the UNTV Cup championship,” said Pacquiao.

The PBA however, though its media bureau chief Willie Marcial, said in an interview with SPIN.ph that Pacquiao’s UPC with the league simply prohibits him from playing in any tournament.

The neophyte Senator previously entertained thoughts of playing in the ABL when he was still part-owner of the Pilipinas Aguilas team but later on abandoned the idea after being reminded of his UPC with the PBA. – Mae Villarin
