The PBA slapped a P20,000 fine on San Miguel reinforcement Troy Gillenwater for bumping referee Rey Yante during the team’s game against Rain or Shine, Sunday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
The incident happened during the 2:29 mark of the 2nd quarter.
Gillenwater was called for a loose ball foul during a rebound play which did not sit well with the bulky reinforcement. He immediately ran towards the team bench and bumped Yante along the way.
The 29-year old American was whistled for a technical foul and was subsequently thrown out of the game for ‘physically contacting an official’ which, as per league rules, warrants disqualification.
Without Gillenwater, the defending champions succumbed to the Elasto Painters for their 2nd straight defeat and dropped to the bottom of the team standings just above Blackwater which is likewise winless in 5 games.
The recent turn of events prompted team management to bring in newly-reinstated Renaldo Balkman to take the place of the ineffective Gillenwater.
Balkman’s agent Sheryl Reyes announced the development on her Twitter account.

The move was confirmed by SMB team manager Gee Abanilla who added that they are in the process of fixing Balkman’s papers in time for the team’s game against the Alaska Aces on Saturday, May 19 in Dumaguete City.
