The PBA is still waiting for FIBA’s decision and/or possible sanctions with the regards to the ugly Gilas Pilipinas vs Australia brawl which happened last July 2 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue Bulacan before making its own move.
Commissioner Willie Marcial said that no decision will made on behalf of the 9 Gilas players involved until the league gets hold of the international governing body for basketball’s final ruling.
“As of now wala muna. Hinihintay lang muna natin yung imbestigasyon ng FIBA kung ano ang gagawin nila, and then tsaka kami magko-convene uli,” said Marcial during a press conference held shortly after a dialogue with the naional team players.
The nine Gilas players who were ejected from the game and are now facing possible sanctions are Andray Blatche, Japeth Aguilar, Troy Rosario, Calvin Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Roger Pogoy, Jayson Castro, Matthew Wright and Carl Bryan Cruz.
Allein Maliksi and Jio Jalalon participated in the free-for-all despite not being on the game roster and may also be penalized.
June Mar Fajardo, Gabe Norwood, and Baser Amer did not take part in the melee.
All players attended the meeting except for Blatche.
Also present were Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) secretary-general Patrick Gregorio, PBA technical chief Eric Castro, and league counsel Atty. Melvin Mendoza.
In case the sanctions cover only international games, Marcial said that the league will abide by it but will immediately appeal if it will cover the PBA as well.
“Kung ang suspension hanggang sa FIBA, susundin namin. Pero kung ang suspension hanggang sa PBA, aapela kami,” stressed Marcial.
FIBA is expected to release its decision by the end of July.
