Rain or Shine took the fight out of Phoenix right from the get go, unleashing a 39-13 first quarter barrage on its way to a 120-99 lopsided victory to snap its two-game skid in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Elasto Painters improved to 2-2, tying their latest victims Fuel Masters (2-2) whose two-game winning streak was ended in a frustrating fashion.

Filling the absence of Jericho Cruz, Jireh Ibañez, Jay Washington and Raymond Almazan, the sophomore-veteran combo of Ed Daquioag and James Yap wreaked havoc on the hapless Fuel Masters side with their breakout games this season.

Before exiting the game with a suspected back injury due to bad fall midway through the third quarter, Ed Daquioag still dealt the most damage to Phoenix with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in just 21 minutes of play.

The veteran shooter that he is, Yap erupted for a season-high 20 points on top of 6 rebounds to backstop Daquioag for the Elasto Painters who even extended the lead to as big as 39 points in the second half.

Coming off a sprained knee injury, Chris Tiu was solid in his return, impressing with an all around numbers of 17 markers, 4 boards, 7 dimes and 2 steals as four more Elasto Painters finished in double digits.

Meanwhile, this year’s fourth overall rookie pick Jason Perkins continued his solid play with 17 markers and six rebounds. However, it didn’t translate to a win for Phoenix as he was only backstopped by hotshot Matthew Wright who also had 17 points.

Rain or Shine clashes against KIA next on Saturday while Phoenix collides with Magnolia on Sunday.

Rain or Shine 120 – Daquioag 21, Yap 20, Maiquez 18, Tiu 17, Nambatac 11, Ponferada 10, Borboran 4, Norwood 4, Trollano 3, Belga 2, Matias 0.
