The 2nd season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League will unfold on Tuesday, June 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with all eyes on expansion team Mandaluyong El Tigre’s prized recruit, ASEAN Basketball League’s back-to-back local MVP Ray Parks.
The 25-year old son of legendary PBA import Bobby Ray Parks will make his debut for the El Tigre as the team takes on inaugural conference runner-up Muntinlupa Cagers in the main event of the league’s opening day.
Parks is joined by Alab teammate JR Alabanza as well as former pros Mark Andaya and Jeoff Javillonar. Gilas cadet Prince Rivero, brothers Axel and Thomas Torres of DLSU and showbiz personality Xian Lim are also with the squad.
Leading the Cagers are holdovers Pari Llagas, Felix Apreku, Dave Moralde and Chito Jaime.
Special Assistant to the President Bong Go is also in the line-up and has vowed to play for the team in its season opener.
Marikina, now handled by former Navotas Clutch coach Elvis Tolentino, will parade former pro Warren Ybanez and actor Gerald Anderson in their duel with the General Santos Warriors in the first game.
A brief but colorful opening ceremony highlighted by the parade of teams and their respective muses will usher in the league’s new season. A total of 26 motorbikes and 1 car will be raffled off to lucky ticket holders.
