San Miguel bounced back strong from a humiliating Game 3 loss to Brgy. Ginebra by taking Game 4 in convincing fashion in the Semifinal round of the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup.
The defending champions stepped on the gas from the get-go and never took its foot off the pedal to cruise to a 102-81 rout of the league’s acknowledged crowd darlings.
The Beermen, who led by as much as 29 points, were never seriously threatened for the duration of the match and even had the luxury of resting their starters for majority of the final period.
The win moved coach Leo Austria’s team one win away from a return trip to the Philippine Cup Finals and on a personal note gave the Beermen mentor more reasons to celebrate.
Austria, who turned 60 on March 14, couldn’t be happier with his squad’s recent victory.
“Maybe that’s the reason why we won this game. Magandang regalo sa ating birthday. Sabi nga nila, kapag may birthday, nasayo ang swerte,” Austria said.
The celebration will be short-lived however as Austria is still cautious of Brgy. Ginebra’s ability to comeback.
“3-1 is still manageable para sa opponent. Dahil hindi ko makakalimutan, we’re leading 3-1 against Ginebra noong player pa ako ng Shell, and then we lost,” recalled Austria of the 1991 First Conference Finals.
The Beermen now have three chances to finish off the Gin Kings, starting Game 5 which is scheduled on Saturday, March 17 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
