San Miguel sends Arnold Van Opstal to GlobalPort for Von Pessumal

In a shocking and unexpected development, newly crowned Commissioner’s Cup champion San Miguel sent its Gilas cadet rookie Arnold Van Opstal to GlobalPort for its own cadet, Von Pessumal.

The trade was announced through microblogging site Twitter by the official account of the PBA.

Details of the deal were not disclosed. Gilas cadets are supposedly ‘untouchable’ by other teams for their first two years in the league but the two involved teams however may have sought a special exemption from the league which gave its approval since the move will benefit both players, especially Van Opstal who has hardly seen action for the Beermen in his first 2 conferences with the team.

The 6’9″ rookie out of DLSU averaged 2.6 points in five games for SMB while Pessumal was slightly more productive with 5.5 points in 22 matches for GlobalPort.

“Official na iyang trade. Na-inform na rin yung dalawa ng management kanina (Monday),” said Marvin Espiritu, the agent of both Van Opstal and Pessumal. – Mae Villarin
