Star buries team-record 17 triples, moves closer to no. 2 with 120-73 demolition of Meralco

Merciless from the get-go, Star handed Meralco its worst loss in franchise history with a 120-73 whipping and bolstered its bid for the last twice-to-beat bonus in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup Saturday at Ynares Sports Center here.

Allein Maliksi led the Hotshots with 25 points built on five 3-pointers in just three quarters while Paul Lee and Jio Jalalon had 15 points each.

“I’m very happy with our defense especially our perimeter defense. I challenged my players that we need to be mentally tough because Meralco is a dangerous team and they’re playing with little pressure,” said Star head coach Chito Victolero.

The 47-point victory is the biggest winning margin this season and the eighth largest win in league history. This was Star’s second win by 40 or more points after demolishing Phoenix, 123-79, last month. The Hotshots also converted 17 triples, a team record. –

The scores:

Star Hotshots 120 – Maliksi 25, Lee 15, Jalalon 15, Ramos 13, Melton 10, Barroca 10, Sangalang 10, Abundo 8, Reavis 4, De Leon 3, Javier 3, Dela Rosa 2, Brondial 2, Pingris 0.

Meralco Bolts 73 – Newsome 13, Al Hussaini 9, Hugnatan 7, Amer 7, Uyloan 6, Caram 6, Grey 5, Chua 4, Faundo 4, Dillinger 4, Daquioag 3, Hodge 3, Yeo 2, Nabong 0.
