Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel head coach Tim Cone feels that there is only one player in the PBA who can match-up and stand toe-to-toe against 4-time MVP June Mar Fajardo. And it is none other the the top center on his team’s roster, 7-foot Greg Slaughter.
“He’s the only real answer to June Mar and we’re fortunate to have him,” said Cone.
The 29-year old slotman out of Ateneo de Manila University started the conference on the right foot, a 24-point performance against Manila Clasico rival Magnolia Hotshots last December 25 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue Bulacan.
Slaughter also hauled down 13 rebounds and blocked 4 shots in a performance so dominating that the Hotshots simply had no answer.
At one point during the game against Magnolia, Slaughter converted on a basket with a foul to boot and celebrated by flexing his muscles. A rare display of confidence by the soft-spoken Cebuano.
Cone, the league’s winning-est bench tactician, believes the Philippine Cup is Slaughter’s domain.
“This is really his conference. People don’t remember that two years ago in the all-Filipino, he was leading the league in scoring and rebounding, and he was just having an awesome conference,” added Cone.
Brgy. Ginebra takes on Fajardo and the defending champion San Miguel Beermen on January 28 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in a rematch of last year’s Philippine Cup Finals.
