Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel opened the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup with back-to-back defeats and as expected the team’s legion of fans have pinned the losses on the subpar performance of import Charles Garica.
The 29-year old Garcia was held to 15 points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line to go along with 9 rebounds in 38 minutes of action in the team’s last game, a 92-96 loss to the TNT KaTropa last Sunday at the MOA Arena.
Despite the inability of Garcia to produce solid numbers, Gin Kings head coach Tim Cone is still keeping his faith on the 6-foot-9 center.
“You make your own judgments on him tomorrow, but he’s our guy and we’re going to go with him. We like him,” said Cone during an interview with SPIN.ph.
“I know the fans are disappointed because when you start out 0 and 2, the finger automatically points at the import, but it’s a lot deeper. The problems are a lot deeper than that. We expect – when we start solving all the problems – people will start to appreciate him,” he added.
For his part, Garcia stressed that while he’s well aware of the clamor to replace him, what’s important is the continued belief and support of the team’s coaching staff.
“I don’t have nothing to prove to nobody, you know. Coach Tim and the rest of the coaches believe in me, that’s the only people I got to prove. Outside of that, irrelevant.”
