For the third straight game, Calvin Abueva went out of the game unceremoniously.
During Gilas Pilipinas’ first game against China in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, Abueva was thrown out after retaliating with a head butt against China enforcer Li Gen. The Chinese big man shoved Abueva from behind with a closed fist. The 29-year old native of Angeles City, Pampanga immediately stood up and headbutted Gen who was still staring him down.
Surprisingly, no technical or flagrant foul was called against the Chinese even after officials reviewed play. Abueva was ejected from the game.
In the game against Iraq, ‘The Beast’ was sent to the bench by the game officials after incurring a scratch on his left wrist. Abueva was on the free throw line after being fouled with 31.5 secs left in the game. He made the first one and was then ordered out of the court due to what officials deemed as an open wound.
Jayson Castro subbed in for Abueva and converted the second free throw.
Against Qatar, Gilas’ final game in the Group Phase, Castro attempted a three and Abueva ran towards the shaded lane to position himself for a rebound. Unfortunately, the Alaska energizer bunny slipped on a slick spot and fell down. He was clutching his left ankle and was unable to stand up by himself. He was then carried off to the bench by his teammates amidst the applause of the predominantly Filipino crowd. – Mae Villarin
