Eugene Phelps made a layup at the buzzer to lift the Phoenix Fuel Masters past the struggling Alaska Aces, 95-93, in the 2017 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Phelps had an impressive game for the Fuel Masters with 29 points, on 11-of-20 shots, and 14 rebounds. RJ Jazul, meanwhile, had 15 points — including 4-of-5 threes — and five assists against his former team.
Phoenix, which now holds a 2-0 win-loss card, dealt the Aces their second straight loss of the conference.
It was a neck-and-neck affair in the first three quarters with Phoenix holding only a slim 72-70 lead heading into the payoff period. A Cyrus Baguio three extended the Fuel Masters’ lead to five, 77-72, but Vic Manuel made two from the stripe to cut it to three. Another triple, this time from RJ Jazul, made it 80-74, 7:54 remaining in the fourth.
