The Meralco Bolts pounced on an undermanned GlobalPort Batang Pier to take a 100-93 win in the 2017 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena. As they improve to an 8-2 record, Meralco also betters their chances at finishing in the top four and enjoying at twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Allen Durham was his dominant self, posting a triple-double of 22 points, 22 rebounds and 10 assists. And he wasn’t even the top scorer of the Bolts. It was Chris Newsome who finished with his own all-around performance of 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
After incoming import Jamal Thomas failed the PBA height test, the Batang Pier was forced to play all-Filipino. And as if that wasn’t enough of a test, they also missed the services of their franchise player, Terrence Romeo.
However, GlobalPort was still able to show some fight in the first half. They started the second quarter with a 12-0 run to take a 32-25 lead. That was bannered by the efforts of Mac Cardona who shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the first two quarters. He scored all of his 11 points in the first half.
