The San Miguel Beermen sealed one of the top two spots in the elimination round of the 2017 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup along with the twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals that goes along with it as they defeated GlobalPort Batang Pier, 112-101, Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Charles Rhodes powered the Beermen in the second half where he scored 22 points but it was their hot start that made SMB head coach Leo Austria happy.
“Today we had a good start and we were the one who set the tone and I’m happy to see na nagrespond yung players kasi they know we cannot take GlobalPort for granted as they’ve been on a roll after their last two games. Nandun yung sense of urgency ng GlobalPort because if they if they lose this game, they will need to win three straight knockout games para makapasok sa semifinals.”
Austria told his players that their game against GlobalPort should be treated as the start of their playoffs and it appeared like they heard him loud and clear with a dominant victory.
