The Star Hotshots extended their winning streak to six and more importantly booked a semifinals duel against the San Miguel Beermen as they dethroned the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, winning 84-69 in Game 2, Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Embarrassed in their last game by the hot-shooting Hotshots, the Painters decided to make it a slow, grind-it-out game. It worked for three quarters as Rain or Shine was neck-and-neck with Star but they ran out of energy and ran out of fouls in the fourth quarter. Cracks started to form in the Painters’ solid Game 2 defense and it was Mark Barroca who took advantage to close out the quarterfinal series with a sweep for Star.
Although he failed to get a single field goal in the first three quarters, Barroca still shot with confidence in the fourth as he finished with 12 points while adding 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.
Rain or Shine was led by Crews who scored 12 points in 22 foul-plagued minutes. No other Painter scored in double digits but Jeff Chan and Chris Tiu finished with 9 point apiece.
