The Gilas Pilipinas Youth team’s campaign in the FIBA Under-19 World Cup suffered a devastating blow after AJ Edu suffered a knee injury just 2 minutes into its game against host nation Greece.
Edu, the 6-foot-10 Fil-Cypriot who together with the 7-foot-2 Kai Sotto form the team’s dreaded twin tower combo, was fouled on the way to the hoop and the teen immediately grabbed his right knee upon landing.
Team officials rushed the Edu to the nearest diagnostics hospital in Heraklion, Greece to undergo an MRI.
“AJ Edu suffered an anterior cruciate ligament and meniscal tear on his right knee with hairline fracture on his right femur bone, based on the MRI images read by the radiologist. The official results will be released on Monday once the hospital’s orthopedic doctor read and reviewed the MRI Images of AJ Edu’s knee. We also requested the orthopedic doctor here at FIBA to check on AJ tomorrow,” read the injury report.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio immediately reached out to the fallen Edu upon hearing the news.
“Know that the federation and I are behind you all the way. We will help you with whatever you need,” said Panlilio. “As I said to all of you, playing for the national team is a journey we will all take together. We will be with you. Walang iwanan. Just focus on recovery now. Reach out to me anytime.”
The team is set to face Argentina for its next game on Monday, July 1 at 1:00am (Manila time).
