Barangay Ginebra buckled down to work once again and snapped a two-game skid with a 97-85 victory over Columbian Dyip in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Center here Saturday.

Greg Slaughter stepped up as Japeth Aguilar went down with an injury in the third quarter, and a lot of other Ginebra players put in significant help as the Gin Kings warded off the Dyip to move notches up to fourth place at 2-2.

Ginebra took the half at 55-44 and pulled away in the third period on the way to dropping Columbian to a heavy logjam at fifth place at 2-3 with NLEX, Meralco, San Miguel Beer and TNT KaTropa.

“We played better, but we didn’t play great. We need to be great to contend in this tournament,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone.

“But we’ve got a lot of improvement. We’re getting better. I like the steps Greg and Japeth are taking to protect the ball. And we had great contribution from our bench, something that we lacked in our first few games,” Cone pointed out.

The Ginebra bench chieftain made special mention of Joe Devance, Sol Mercado and the returning Jeff Chan.
