Brgy. Ginebra sweeps Magnolia, advances to Commissioner’s Cup semis

Brgy. Ginebra wasted no time in dispatching Manila Clasico rival Magnolia as the defending champs turned on the heat in the 2nd half and never looked back, pummeling the Hotshots 106-80 to sweep the series 2-0 and advance to the semifinal round of the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Justin Brownlee led the juggernaut in the 3rd as the Gin Kings blew the game wide open from an 8-point halftime lead to a 27-point advantage going into the final frame.

The 4th-seeded Brgy. Ginebra now await the winner of the TNT vs Alaska series which is down to a rubber match scheduled for Wednesday, July 24.

Brownlee finished with a game-high 30 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.

“Certainly, this is a big surprise for us,” said a relieved Gin Kings head coach Tim Cone. “We didn’t expect this. We were really determined tonight because we came out and not played well in Game Twos in the last couple of conferences against this team. It was really on us to come out and change the narrative and make it different.”

“Even though we fell behind in the first minute or two, I saw the intensity of the players and I was confident that we will put on a good game tonight. I didn’t expect it to be this good but I expected us to play a good game tonight,” added the league’s winningest mentor.

Japeth Aguilar backstopped the reigning Best Import with 18 points while LA Tenorio and Mark Caguioa added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The loss was the 6th straight for the Hotshots dating back to the elimination round and snapped the team’s 2-series win streak against the Gin Kings.
