Streaking Phoenix remained unbeaten while making Blackwater go back to the drawing board with a 114-95 victory Friday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Calvin Abueva came off the bench to finish with game-highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds and Matthew Wright did his part in leading a sustained attack that netted the Fuel Masters as much as a 37-point lead that served as ample cushion in the face of the Elite coming to life in the second half.
The win, its fourth in as many outings, solidified Phoenix’s hold on the solo leadership.
It was also a fitting gift for coach Louie Alas, whose first granddaughter, Kaly, was born early Friday.
The victory should also leave some pleasant memories for Alas, especially since he was expecting a grind-it-out affair against a Blackwater side which went into the game on a high after shocking erstwhile unbeaten Rain or Shine just last Wednesday.
