Chito Victolero blames defensive lapses for Magnolia’s lopsided loss to Brgy. Ginebra

Magnolia absorbed its 4th defeat in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup via 102-81 rout at the hands of Manila Clasico rival Brgy. Ginebra, Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Hotshots were still in control at the end of the 1st half but succumbed to the 3rd quarter onslaught of the Gin Kings anchored on the hot-shooting of its prolific reinforcement Justin Brownlee.

The 31-year old reigning Best Import of the conference ended up with a career-best 49 points on a scorching 75% shooting from the field to go along with 20 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal.

“Medyo we had a bad start sa third quarter. I think they scored more than 30 points in the third quarter,” said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero.

“May kaunting problem yung depensa namin. Unang una yung transition defense namin noong third and then nahirapan kami maka-adjust doon sa depensa kay Brownlee – he scored 49 points,” added the former PBA player.

The Hotshots gave up a total of 56 points in the 2nd half and scored only 34 as the back-to-back runner-up of the Philippine Cup even trailed by as much as 23 points, 102-79, after a Japeth Aguilar highlight slam.

“Hindi kami yun. Hindi kami mananalo on any team if they scored 100 plus points. We have to limit our opponents under 90 points,” explained Victolero.

“Medyo mabigat kasi coming from a five-game winning streak and then we have a two-game losing streak naman. I don’t want to make an excuse kasi maganda naman ang nilalaro ng mga kalaban namin. Siguro they are more prepared than us. It’s my job now to motivate and push my players.”
