CJ Perez, Columbian drop upset axe on San Miguel in overtime thriller

Columbian may be struggling in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup but that doesn’t mean that they’ll go down without a fight, even against a powerhouse team like the San Miguel Beermen.

The trio of Lester Prosper, CJ Perez and Rashawn McCarthy combined for 101 points to power the league’s whipping boys to a 134-132 overtime win against the reigning Philippine Cup champions.

It was only the second victory for the Johnedel Cardel-mentored squad in the conference against 6 losses. The Beermen, on the other hand, absorbed their 5th defeat and fell deeper in the team standings with a 2-5 record.

Prosper finished with a game-high 40 points spiked by 6 triples to go along with 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks while Perez, the 2018 top overall pick, had 34 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. McCarthy had a double-double of 27 points and 14 assists.

“I give credit to the players, even though we were losing three straight, at least nandoon pa rin sila,” said Cardel shortly after the match. “Going into the San Miguel game, this is a champion team. Sabi ko, if we play together, we play patience in our offense, if we play hard on defense, nothing is impossible.”

Glenn Khobuntin contributed 8 points including a clutch triple which gave the Dyip a more comfortable 4-point edge, 132-128, with time down to 42.4 seconds.

Charles Rhodes paced the Beermen with 26 points and 16 rebounds but committed a game-high 9 turnovers. June Mar Fajardo added 24 markers and 15 boards while Marcio Lassiter, who was earlier feted for his entry in the league’s 5,000-point club, contributed 19 points.
