Gab Banal now an unrestricted free agent after turning down extension offer from Alaska

After an impressive PBA return during the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup, Gab Banal has decided to secure his release from the Alaska Aces.

The 31-year old Banal, who was the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 PBA draft, turned down a one-conference extension offer from the Wilfred Uytengsu-owned franchise making him an unrestricted free agent. He can now sign with any team in the league.

“Gab did not want to sign the contract extension with Alaska. We had the offer on the table and we were hoping he would accept,” wrote Cariaso in a Viber message to PBA Rush.

“After a few weeks of negotiating, he has decided to move forward and not sign. After meeting him personally on Thursday, he informed us on his decision Friday morning,” he added.

Banal, whose father Joel was a former coach of the Aces, submitted averages of 8.73 points (4th in the team) on 44.3% shooting from the field and a league-leading 45.2% shooting from three-point country, 3.45 rebounds, 1.18 assists and 0.73 steals in 21 minutes of action during the recently concluded All-Filipino conference.

As per Cariaso, Banal’s departure is a non-issue since the team has an abundance of players who play the same position.

“For us, that’s honestly not a problem. We have guys who can play that No.3 position and Kevin Racal will be back for us this conference also,” explained the 1995 PBA Rookie of the Year.
