Gab Banal signs ‘long-term’ deal with TNT

TNT Tropang Giga added firepower into its rank after signing unrestricted free agent Gab Banal.

“Yes, we just signed Gab Banal,” confirmed TNT team manager Gabby Cui who refused to divulge terms of the contract.

The 31-year old former MPBL player’s father, Joel Banal, however, claimed that his son signed a two-year deal for an undisclosed amount.

“First time for Gab after seven years that he will be given a two-year deal,” said the elder Banal who, incidentally, led the flagship team of the MVP group to its first PBA title in 2003.

“But more than that, he has a chance of fulfilling his dream to become a champion under the tutelage of coach Chot Reyes,” he added.

Banal, who had a remarkable stint for the Aces during the 2021 Philippine Cup, turned down a one-conference extension offer from the Wilfred Uytengsu-owned franchise. He said, during an interview with Reuben Terrado of Spin.Ph, that he is looking for job security via long-term contract.

He produced decent numbers in his one-and-done stint with Alaska in the Bacolor semi-bubble. The 22nd overall pick of the 2014 draft submitted 11-game averages of 8.7 points – highlighted by a league-leading 45.2% shooting clip from beyond the arc, to go with 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.

Prior to the agreement with the 2021 Philippine Cup champs, Banal has a pending two-year offer from Nueva Ecija in the MPBL, as per team head coach Charles Tiu. The regional league is scheduled to tip-off on December 11.

Banal and with his new team will attempt to sweep the 46th season after ending a 6-year title drought in recent Philippine Cup. TNT’s 3×3 team likewise showcased supremacy in the league’s 3×3 tournament by beating sister team Meralco in the Finals to emerge as champions of the inaugural leg.
