Gilas Pilipinas closed out its frustrating 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup campaign with a 95-75 loss to Iran, Sunday night at the Beijing Wukesong Sports Center in China.
The Philippine team finished with a 0-5 record and is in danger of ending up as the worst team in a field of 32 with an aggregate of -147 after 5 games. Tomorrow’s games pitting Japan (-115) against Montenegro and Jordan (-132) vs Senegal will determine that final placings of the teams in the Classification Round.
The victory propelled Iran into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after China earlier lost to Nigera, 86-73. The two Asian squads finished with identical 2-3 records but the Iranians cliched the Olympic seat after the tiebreaker came into play.
Gilas had a good start and even took a 2-point advantage, 19-17, halfway into the opening frame but things started to fall apart as the first quarter came to a close. Iran ended up with as 6-point lead entering the 2nd canto.
It was all downhill for the Yeng Guiao-mentored squad as they were outscored by the Iranians in the 2nd – 18-10, and 3rd – 27-16, to fall behind by 25, 75-50, going into the payoff period.
Iran continued to pound the Philippines in the 4th as the lead ballooned to 29, 91-62, before the Hamed Haddadi-led team took its feet off the gas pedal and settled for a 20-point winning margin.
Robert Bolick topscored for Gilas with 15 points while Andray Blatche, who was ejected during the 5-minute mark of the 4th period for incurring his 2nd technical foul, finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. June Mar Fajardo and Roger Pogoy contributed 10 and 9 markers, respectively.
