The Gilas Pilipinas Youth team won’t go home empty-handed after all.
The country’s national youth basketball squad finally booked a win in the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup by bringing down China, 86-72, Saturday at the Heraklion University Sports Hall in Heraklion Greece.
Dave Ildefonso paced Gilas Youth with 21 points spiked by 4 of 7 shooting from 3-point country to go along with 6 rebounds and 7 assists while Carl Tamayo added 20 points on 8 of 16 shooting from the field plus 6 boards.
James Spencer and Rhayyan Amsali added 11 points apiece.
Kai Sotto played only 12 minutes due to foul trouble and finished with 5 points and 2 boards.
Coming off a nip-and-tuck affair in the 1st 2 quarters, the Filipinos came out with guns ablaze in the 3rd and outscored the Chinese squad 31-20 to establish control of the game. From a 15-point advantage to start the final frame, the Gilas boys even extended the lead to 18 after a 5-point cluster from Ildefonso.
Gilas Youth will now await the winner of the New Zealand vs Senegal match to determine its opponent in the battle for 13th place.
