Brgy. Ginebra big man Greg Slaughter will take the place of Roger Pogoy in the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s team for the ongoing 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
This development was announced by national team head coach Tim Cone after the squad’s Monday practice.
“It’s gonna be announced in the manager’s meeting on Tuesday at 2:00pm. We have a medical certificate for Pogoy and Greg will replace him in the lineup,” Cone said.
Pogoy sustained a back injury (bulging disc) during TNT’s quarterfinal match in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup against defending champion Magnolia.
Slaughter, meanwhile, was earlier cut from the team due to a thumb injury but has since fully recovered.
“He’s playing really well. His thumb is fully healed and I think a seven-footer in the Gilas program is a must because you’re gonna try to develop those guys, just like you need a Kai Sotto eventually. Those guys are rare. They don’t come around all the time,” said Cone.
Slaughter will complete the Final 12 cast which lists Brgy. Ginebra teammates Japeth Aguilar, LA Tenorio & Stanley Pringle, San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Ross, TNT’s Troy Rosario, Alaska’s Vic Manuel, Phoenix Pulse’s Matthew Wright, NLEX’ Kiefer Ravena and NorthPort’s Christian Standhardinger.
Gilas will make its debut in the biennial meet against Singapore on Wednesday, December 4 at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.
