Greg Slaughter rested ahead of another tough week for NorthPort

It was a timely rest for ailing big man Greg Slaughter as NorthPort prepares for tougher battles ahead as they round up their last four games in the elimination round of the2021 PBA Philippine Cup.

The Batang Pier’s new center was missing in action since the second quarter ejection due to flagrant foul penalty two last Saturday on Terrafirma’s Roosevelt Adams. He also did not see action against NLEX due to a skin infection called “cellulitis”.

Interim coach Bonnie Tan confirmed it saying that the former Brgy. Ginebra star experiences slight hip pains, so they decided to sit him out.

Despite pulling off a 2-point win over the Road Warriors, the top-rebounding team in the league, with 49 caroms per game, sorely missed the presence of the Fil-Am behemoth and it showed as they lost in the battle of the boards, 60-43.

“We miss his rebounding. ‘Yung rebounding namin, being the number one team, pero parang hindi kami number one,” said Tan, whose wards gave up 24 offensive rebounds and 26 points off second chances.

With Slaughter fully rested, the team is looking to extend their winning streak as they face league-leading TNT, streaking Rain or Shine, tough Magnolia, and unpredictable Alaska.

Tan, who takes temporarily the baton of head coach Pido Jarencio, understands the team’s predicament but accepts that they need to battle forward.

“We’ll support ‘yung schedule ng PBA kasi lahat ng teams nagsa-sacrifice. Ayaw rin naman nating maiwan ‘yung isang tao na mahaba ‘yung hinahabol o nade-delay yung league,” he said.
