Fresh from relinquishing his three-point title to pal Peter June Simon, James Yap is now looking forward to playing alongside his long-time teammate in the upcoming PBA All-Star Game, Sunday night at the Calasiao Sports Complex in Calasiao, Pangasinan.
The 37-year old Rain or Shine gunner will be making his 16th straight appearance as a starter in the league’s annual spectacle, a record which only Yap himself has accomplished.
While Asi Taulava will be playing in his 17th All-Star game which is the current record for the most appearances, not all his stints were as starters making Yap’s feat more impressive.
Yap expressed his gratitude to the fans for voting him into the All-Stars once more.
“Sixteenth straight year as a starter? Kahit nga ako hindi makapaniwala na talagang every All-Star, nilalagay ako as starter. Kaya nagpapasalamat ako sa walang sawang suporta ng mga fans,” said the two-time league MVP.
Aside from Simon, Yap will share the stage with former Purefoods teammates Mark Barroca and Alvin Patrimonio, now the team’s manager.
Another Purefoods legend, Jerry Codinera, was included in the team as recognition of the league’s greats and the 30th anniversary All-Star game as well.
“Syempre excited ako,” said Yap when asked about the forthcoming Purefoods reunion.
“Hindi ko naabutan si Jerry pero si Cap Alvin excited ako dahil naabutan ko siya nung rookie year ko. Yun yung mga kumbaga, tinitingala ko rin and mga idol ko bago ako pumasok sa PBA,” he added.
