Former PBA MVP and current San Miguel Beermen assistant coach Jimmy Alapag has accepted an invitation to join the coaching staff of the Sacramento Kings for the upcoming 2019 Summer League which will be held at the Thomas and Mack Center and Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 5 to 15.
All 30 NBA teams as well as the national teams of China and Croatia are set to participate.
According to Alapag, former NBA player and current Kings general manager Vlade Divac extended the invitation.
Divac and Alapag are both members of the FIBA Players’ Commission.
“I stayed in touch with Vlade Divac who is the Chairman of the FIBA Players’ Commission, where I’ve been a member of for the past four years,” said Alapag.
“After our campaign ended in the ABL, I got to talk to him again. I told him I needed to learn more about coaching because I’ve only been a head coach for two years and he brought up the idea that I should come in and learn from the Sacramento Kings where he is also the general manager,” added the six-time PBA champion.
The top 20 picks from the upcoming 2019 NBA Rookie Draft, which is scheduled on June 20, will compete in the league.
“I cherish the opportunity to continue my education in coaching. I’ve been blessed to have worked with a lot of great coaches in the PBA and with Gilas Pilipinas and I’m excited to learn more from the coaches in the NBA,” Alapag said.
The 2003 PBA Rookie of the Year is scheduled to leave on the 26th to attend the Kings’ training camp in Sacramento before heading out to Las Vegas.
