June Mar Fajardo is listed as doubtful for San Miguel Beermen’s campaign in East Asia Super League’s Terrific 12 tournament slated on September 17 to 22 in Macau after the 5-time PBA MVP suffered an ankle injury while playing for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
San Miguel coach Leo Austria bared that Fajardo is still bothered by the said injury which forced the 6-foot-10 Cebuano to miss the national team’s practice prior to the game against Serbia.
“Si June Mar doubtful. We don’t know if he is going to play kasi kitang-kita mo magang-maga ankle niya,” said Austria.
Gilas coach Yeng Guiao described the injury as just a slight ankle sprain but Austria claimed it was more than that.
“Talagang ang puso niya, nasa bayan na even though hindi playable yun, pinilit niya for the love of the country,” said the 1985 PBA Rookie of the Year.
Fajardo, who posted averages of 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in 5 games for Gilas in the World Cup, showed up for the Beermen’s practice last Wednesday but team officials allowed him to take some time off before going back to training in preparation for the team’s quest to sweep all the 3 titles of the PBA’s 44th season.
The 29-year old, top overall pick of the 2012 rookie draft, however, will join the team when it departs for Macau on Monday and will be in uniform but will remain a game-time decision as per Austria.
The team will play the Shenzhen Aviators on September 17 and then the Ryukyu Golden Kings on the 19th.
