Justin Browlee drained a clutch trey with 1:24 left in the game and it proved to be the game-winner as Brgy. Ginebra picked up its second straight win with a 73-70 squeaker over previously unbeaten NorthPort.
The reigning Best Import led the Gin Kings with 32 points, including his team’s last 5 to give the crowd darlings the lead after Moala Tautuaa shoved NorthPort on top 70-68.
The Batang Pier still had their chances to send the game into overtime but missed all three of their attempts from long distance.
Brgy. Ginebra improved to 2-1 while NorthPort dropped to 3-1 after absorbing their first defeat in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Gin Kings coach Tim Cone later on admitted that he felt that the game was already a lost cause.
“I almost didn’t remember to come in here. I coached poorly. I thought it was a loss. We were turnover prone tonight. The problem with the zone is it really makes you look bad. The zone really bothered us, gave us a hard time finding high percentage shots. Our defense kept us in the game,” said the most decorated coach in league history.
Greg Slaughter backstopped Brownlee with 16 points while Scottie Thompson finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.
Moala Tautuaa and Sean Anthony paced NorthPort with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
