Kai Sotto is set to depart for Atlanta, Georgia USA this coming Monday, April 1 and will start training in his bid to become the first homegrown Filipino to play in the NBA.
The 16-year old son of former PBA player Ervin Sotto will train for two months before heading to Heralkion, Greece wherein he will join the rest of the Batang Gilas for the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup slated on June 29 to July 7.
“Ang unang stop namin is US para mag-training,” said the elder Sotto during the send-off dinner hosted by Chooks-to-Go, Tuesday night at the EDSA Shangri-La in Mandaluyong City.
“Alam mo naman basketball is a physical game kaya para makasabay siya sa mga malalakas na players, kailangan mag-start muna siya ng training para lumakas katawan niya,” he added.
The Sottos will be based in Atlanta since it is where East-West Private is headquartered, the agency they had just signed with. It is the same firm that represents Gilas Pilipinas naturalized player Andray Blatche.
The younger Sotto will return to the US after the FIBA tournament to resume his training before deciding where to head next. At least five European teams are said to be after his services, four from Spain (including powerhouse Real Madrid) and one from Germany.
Playing in the US NCAA is already out of the question as the 7-foot-2 teenager has already listed the services of an agent.
