Lee shines as Magnolia knocks Brgy. Ginebra out to set semis date with Rain or Shine

Magnolia leaned on the hot-shooting of Paul Lee in the third period to dispose of Manila Clasico rival Brgy. Ginebra, 85-72, in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Lee dropped 13 of his team-high 25 points in the pivotal 3rd quarter as the Hotshots outscored the Gin Kings 28-13 to take control of the do-or-die match.

The Hotshots led by as much as 22 points but the Gin Kings were able to cut it down to 9 going into the closing minutes. Another three-pointer from Lee, however, served as the dagger as the lead ballooned once more to double digits, 81-69, with just a little over 2 minutes left in the contest.

It was a sorry loss for the Brgy. Ginebra who took Game 1 of the series before losing the next two via routs.

“Sabi ko sa mga players, if we give our 100 percent effort, and the energy is there, we have a good chance. We did it starting Game 2 at nadala namin sa Game 3 ngayon,” said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero.

Mark Barroca contributed 13 points while Aldrech Ramos had 11. Ian Sangalang finished in double-double with 10 points to go along with 10 boards.

Jeff Chan led Brgy. Ginebra with 17 points in only 22 minutes of action. Scottie Thompson managed only 3 points but had a career-high 19 rebounds as well as 7 assists and 3 steals. Japeth Aguilar and Joe Devance had 16 and 12 points respectively.

The Hotshots take on the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the next round which is slated to start on Friday, April 12.
