Meralco didn’t let Phoenix get into the groove and posted a runaway 111-94 victory Sunday in the PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Five players finished in double figures for the Bolts, including fourth-year guard Chris Newsome who registered a triple-double of 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists in the team’s first back-to-back wins this conference for a 3-1 (win-loss) record.
Import Allen Durham led the Bolts with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while guard Baser Amer continued his hot shooting streak with 26 points spiked by four three-pointers as Meralco was hardly threatened by the Fuel Masters, who had to make do without ejected coach Louie Alas from the second quarter onwards.
Meralco coach Norman Black lauded the Bolts for playing a good offensive game this time.
“I couldn’t really ask for more as far as our offense is concerned especially when it came to the balance (scoring), the way the players move the basketball. And tonight I thought we did a very good job of really playing as a team offensively and sharing the ball,” said Black afterwards.
The Bolts shot 48 percent from the field (29-of-55), including 40 percent from three-point range (12-of-30). They led the Fuel Masters by as many as 88-61.
