PBA board turns down Richard del Rosario’s ‘Quarantine Cup’ proposal

The PBA Board of Governors have reportedly turned down a proposal by Brgy. Ginebra assistant coach Richard del Rosario to stage a tournament aptly named ‘Quarantine Cup’ in order to salvage the league’s 45th season.

The proposal, which was presented by the former PBA player through a nine-minute video on his Youtube channel, calls for a 17-day elimination round followed by a playoffs which will be played under strict health protocols.

The board, however, immediately dismissed the idea due to ‘enormous expenses and great risks’.

Tim Cone, on the other hand, gave his seal of approval to the proposal which, according to del Rosario himself, was far from being perfect.

“I have prepared this proposal knowing that it may be full of loose ends and improbabilities. That’s why I’m offering it to the better judgement of the members of the PBA board to decide if there’s even one aspect in this proposal that we can build on,” stressed Cone’s lead deputy.

When pressed to comment, league commissioner Willie Marcial said that restarting the season isn’t considered a priority at this point in time.

“We’ve put the plan in the backburner,” bared Marcial.

The league was forced to call off the 2020 Philippine Cup on March 11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the board is expected to reach a decision by August regarding the fate of the mothballed season.
