Gilas Pilipinas program director Tab Baldwin has been slapped with a P75,000 fine by the PBA on Tuesday for comments deemed as detrimental to the league.
The 62-year old American/New Zealander, who made the remarks during an online interview in the podcast Coaches Unfiltered, was also suspended for three games.
League commissioner Willie Marcial announced the penalty a day after meeting with the TNT KaTropa assistant coach via video conferencing.
Baldwin, who is also the head coach of Ateneo de Manila University, earlier apologized for his remarks which similarly drew the ire of the Basketball Coaches of the Philippines (BCAP) as well as other personalities in the local basketball community.
“I feel bad that has happened but that is not my intention,” said the former national team mentor who claimed that limiting the teams to just one import in two of the league’s three conferences is a big mistake and the these reinforcements are being given preferential treatment by the game officials.
He also stated that local basketball coaches are ‘tactically immature’.
Baldwin, however, claimed that his comments have been taken out of context.
